About Professor Kerryn Phelps AM

Doctor, health communicator, public health and civil rights advocate

Professor Kerryn Phelps AM is one of Australia’s best-known doctors, health communicators and public health and civil rights advocates.

Prof. Phelps was the first woman and Independent to be elected to the seat of Wentworth in the House of Representatives, in the Federal By Election 2018. In 2016 she was elected to the City of Sydney Council, and was Deputy Lord Mayor from 2016 to 2017. She was first female President of the Australian Medical Association.

For two decades, Prof. Phelps has been at the forefront of the struggle for LGBTQI inclusion and equality in Australia, and along with her wife become one of the first same sex couples to adopt under the same sex adoption in New South Wales.

She is a Patron of ACON’s Pride in Health+Wellbeing program.

Prof. Phelps was awarded an Order of Australia for her contributions to Medicine as well as the Centenary Medal.
