About Stephen Mayne

Stephen Mayne is a Walkley Award winning journalist who for 10 years worked for major Australian newspapers as a reporter, business editor, gossip columnist and chief of staff.

As a former press secretary in Jeff Kennett’s media unit, Stephen appeared on 4 Corners in 1997 as a whistleblower about the Premier’s share dealings. This led to a career as an independent governance crusader.

During the 1999 Victorian election Stephen published the widely read www.jeffed.com . With Jeff gone, Stephen launched www.crikey.com.au in February 2000. Crikey became Australia’s best known independent ezine.

After five hard years, which included the loss of his home in a defamation action, Crikey was sold for $1 million.

Stephen is also Australia’s best known shareholder activist. He is an entertaining after dinner speaker or someone with a serious message on corporate, media and political issues.
